Influence and Persuasion – The Only 2 Powerful Skills For Success

Introduction

I believe there’re only two skills that supersede any other one – influence and persuasion. The journey to satisfy our desires is seemingly unending and, hence, we try to make more out of the foreseeable yards in order to cushion the ones beyond. We grab whatever skills, qualities and individuals helpful to the course. Talking about skills and qualities, If you want to achieve almost all your desires, then these powerful skills must be a priority.

What is Influence?

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Influence is defined as “the act or power of producing an effect without apparent exertion of force or direct exercise of command”. The keynote here is that one achieves the wanted result with an indirect impact. A typical example will be loving/hating someone. Such emotion doesn’t usually come as an instruction, like “Hey, love this person or hate me”. Something determines whether you’ll love or hate. Hence, people use the phrase “influenced the decision”.

Why Influence Is A Superpower?

Think about it for a minute; every want involves yourself, someone or something. In every second, several influences comes to play. The outputs are as a result of the interactions of the many influences (and persuasion).

Influence is like the wind you blow to turn things in your favour. The stronger it is, the more its ability to cause change.

On yourself, it’s the reason you wake up everyday to chase your dreams. It’s also why you are either focused or distracted, good or bad, adorable or annoying. In fact, everything about you can be traced back to it. It simply decides how you live. If that’s not a superpower to have so much control over your being,  then I don’t know what is.

In a world where people have their own priorities and processing units (brains), how do you get them to consider yours ahead of theirs? That is where influence and persuasion come in. Your actions and inactions must convince them why it is so important that they heed to your bidding, do things your way or buy into your ideas. A superpower indeed!

What you don’t control controls you. Is it not surprising emotions can make people do things way out of the ordinary? How can you be that addicted something which makes you helpless and hopeless? I think you now get the idea of how powerful this skill can be.

What is Persuasion?

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the term as “the act of causing (someone) to agree with a belief or course of action by using arguments or earnest request”. This is more like the direct version of an influence. You straightforward speak to a person and get them to do something.

Why Persuasion Is A Superpower?

For this one, I’m certain you have had many experiences. It is a common practice because it is inevitable in human interactions. Since you have tried it several times, you already know the importance and benefits of being so good at it.

Life is bound to have conflicting moments all the time. In that case, one always needs a convincing case to advance his or her choice ahead of the others. If you can persuade people all the time, then you’ll have your way all the time.

Influence and Persuasion Combo 

Consider every successful person you know and you will observe they are either better at one or both skills. 

It is a fact that the mind controls the other body parts, so whatever can take charge of the brain has the power of control. Influence and persuasion are the only two skills that give access to every brain, including yours. That’s why mastering them makes people powerful. Likewise, the moment they are no longer under influence or cannot be persuaded, they cannot be controlled. 

Influence is always around while persuasion plays on the influences of the person. If the argument point does not have any bearing on the person, there’s little to no chance of persuading. In other words, if the influence signals are too feeble to get you what you want from people, you maximize them to get your effect. Isn’t that what convincing is about?

Conclusion 

Before any skill can yield the desired result, especially when other people are involved, it must rely on the two skills discussed. If you always want things done your way, master them.
